Are you a shopaholic but on a budget? Stop what you’re doing and head to your local thrift store—like now! Thrifting is a great way to get stylish unique clothing for a bargain price! For decades, people have been embarrassed to be seen in second hand clothing stores but now more than ever, people are beginning to find worth in thrifting. Here are some basic tips if you want to give thrifting a shot!
Check it out, before you ring it out!
Most thrift stores don’t allow returns so before buying anything make sure you check the following:
1. No stains. (some stains are removable)
2. Zippers are working.
3. Buttons are all there. (you can add your own button at home)
4. No tears or holes.
5. Make sure it’s your size!
Don’t buy it if you don’t need it!
As much as you may love that cute top that is two sizes too small and might fit when you lose the weight, just leave it! Yes, I know it’s cheap but nothing is worse than a messy closet filled with clothes that don’t fit. Instead, buy clothing you know will fit and will feel good in today.
Is it worth it?
Believe it or not, many thrift stores know about name brands and will sell designer clothing at a much higher price. However, stores often mistake department store clothing as being high end and will charge you about the same price as buying it new. So, if you see a dress you know you can buy at Target for the same price, you might as well get it new! Don’t be fooled into thinking thrift stores are always the cheapest way to buy clothing.
Go in with a game plan.
Thrift stores can be overwhelming with endless amounts of clothing! Make a list of what you are looking for before going on your hunt. This will help reduce distraction and maximize your time at the store. For the most part, thrift stores are quite organized in how they display clothing but there are some stores that pile clothing and you may have to dig for your treasures. But knowing what you are looking for will give you a sense of direction and help you avoid unnecessary searching through piles of clothing.
Learn to make small alterations yourself.
You may find the perfect pair of jeans that may be a few inches too long, being able to hem will help you decide if the clothing is worth investing. Second hand clothing is typically one of a kind so it may be difficult to find a perfect fit so knowing how to sew can make it easier to shop! Be creative by manipulating clothing such as altering, cutting, adding embellishments to really making it your own! Thrift shopping should be a fun experience, like hello, you’re saving money and looking chic for doing so!
